H2Oh No I Can’t Drink That Much!

I’m sure you have heard that you are supposed to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day, but trying to actually do it can be difficult. Drinking water has so many benefits for your body. It helps flush toxins out of your system and aids digestion. People drink water to help clear acne, aid in weight loss, help with sicknesses, and so many other things. Every year I say that I am going to start drinking more water, but I find it extremely hard to fit it into my schedule and make it a habit. Here are a few tips to make it easier to drink the daily recommended amount of water!

*The Institute of Medicine recommends Men consume 3 liters (about 102 ounces) of fluids per day and women consume 2.2 liters (about 76 ounces) of fluids per day. This is basically a minimum recommended amount, but drinking more than this is okay and even encouraged!*

  • Always keep a water bottle near you

    water-bottle-nearHaving your water bottle constantly in sight will make you remember that you need to drink it. (I usually keep one in my backpack, car, and my room!)


    Get a bottle that works for you

    A bottle that has the measurements on the side makes it easier to keep track of how much you have drank and much more you still need to drink. You can find really inexpensive ones at Walmart or Target!

    I like using a Camelbak that has a bite-and-sip valve. Something about having to do something to drink the water is addictive (weird, I know). This bottle doesn’t have the measurements broken down, but it holds .75 liters of water.

  • Filter your water

    If you don’t want to keep buying cases of water, you can get a filtered water pitcher or a water bottle with a filter built in. You will save a lot more money doing this than constantly buying cases of water from the store.

  • Drink water before you eat

    You should try to drink a glass of water before every meal and snack. This will make you feel fuller and it will help prevent overeating. A lot of people find it easy to drink a glass every time they wake up, leave the house, or basically do any significant point in time.

  • Add some flavor fruit-water

    Sometimes drinking plain water can get old. You can add different fruits to your water to give it more flavor. I like using lemons, limes, oranges, or berries. I have also seen people use mint to add more flavor.

    If you want something a little fizzier to sip on, try opting for sparking water. They are naturally flavored and usually have no calories. I prefer drinking La Croix because they have so many different flavors to choose from and are not super bitter.

  • Start a routine

    A lot of people will set a goal for themselves in order to drink the amount of water they need. You can get a gallon sized bottle and write on it to help make sure you are drinking it regularly (drink a certain amount by noon, before dinner, etc.). I make sure I fill up my Camelbak at least three times throughout the day!


I know it’s hard to find the motivation to drink so much water, but once you consistently do it, it becomes a habit. If you start drinking the right amount of water, you will feel so much better physically and mentally! Plus, it’s going to save you money that would be spent on soda and other sugary drinks!
